Synopsis:
The Nile is the longest river on earth and the most fascinating in history. Its waters come from two regions, the high Ethiopian mountains and the Great Lakes region in Uganda. Up until today, scientists and adventurers have studied and described the White Nile basin, but fewer have been bold enough to discover and study the Blue Nile basin, the one that comes from Ethiopia. The Blue Nile is one of the last unexplored greatest rivers on earth.

In 2004 the “Blue Nile 1st Descent Expedition” has been organized. This documentary gathers the great historic adventure achieved by this expedition: being the first ones to descend the Blue Nile from its source in Ethiopia down to Egypt, where the great Nile flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

The expedition consists of geophysicist Pasquale Scaturro, white water expert and expedition leader, and Gordon Brown, extreme kayaker and professional cameraman.

The goal of the expedition is to descend the entire Blue Nile, from its source on Ethiopian highlands, going through Khartum -where it meets the White Nile to become the great Nile-, down to its mouth on the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt more than 3,000 miles away.

At the beginning it feels like a risky adventure, but as the river flows, the journey just gets more detailed and it allows us to appreciate the life, the people and the culture of the river in all three countries crossed by the Blue Nile: Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. Thanks to this trip we discover not only the deep bonds between these three civilizations, but also the feelings of the members of the expedition, which go from euphoria to despair due to the harsh conditions they have to deal with.

The Blue Nile has never been explored, therefore each day of the journey brings new challenges with it. The expedition has to overcome parts where there is not enough water to put the boats in the river, deadly rapids, the menace from deadly hippopotamus and crocodiles, high desert temperatures, sand storms, waves, huge falls, conflicts with the governments of the countries they go through, malaria and more than 40 days with no trace of civilization.

But on the same trip they also find fascinating and remote places, villages that live aside of civilization, and archeological treasures such as Meroe’s black pyramids in Sudan, the rural Christian churches in Ethiopia, or the temples of Abu Simbel, Aswan and Luxor in Egypt. They also discover the life of the tribal peoples, villages and cities that live surrounding the river, and a deep respect and love for Nature.

An unforgettable adventure after almost four months of expedition documented with a camera that records a historic event: the first descent of the entire Blue Nile, from an adventurous, human and historical approach.
